hello

Who is behind OX-Oceanix® project?

BEHIND THE OX PROJECT, THERE'S KNOWLEDGE, A PASSION FOR WATCHMAKING, AND A STRONG EXPERIENCE IN CREATING AN EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY OF INSTRUMENT AND DIVER'S WATCHES. THE FIRST ONE TO MAKE AN APPEARANCE IS THE BELOVED FROG300, WHICH STARTED TO BE DESIGNED IN THE SUMMER OF 2021.

GET READY FOR AN INSPIRING STORY!

The Creator

Joseph Bolart, the mastermind behind the OX-Oceanix Scuba Watches project, possesses an intense and innate love for timepieces and horology that dates back to his earliest memories. This passion was instilled in him by his grandfather, Juan, who was an avid collector and owned an array of timepieces, including the first red LED watches from Heuer and the classic "gold" Omega you'd get if you won a soccer bet (in Spain, a soccer betting game called "La Quiniela" is based on the results of the National League). There's not a single childhood Kodak photo of Bolart where he's not wearing a watch.

Bolart is well-known in the watchmaking community in Spain, where he has resided for many years. He successfully shared his knowledge and experience of Japanese watches through a popular blog called 'Relojesmadeinjapan', japanese watches with which he established a true and unbreakable bond, but not before he had had a long relationship with Swiss watchmaking.

As he explains in his video, being a watch lover and (obsessed) collector is no easy task, and finding the true "holy grail" is even more challenging. By "holy grail," we mean the perfect watch, one that embodies absolute perfection in terms of quality, functionality, aesthetics, comfort, and, if possible, price. This pursuit can even lead you to ruin... in the deepest sense, watches are said to be addictive. And it's true—they are because, if all goes well, they accompany you throughout your entire life... and it starts with one, then two, three, and soon enough, you have another, and another...

STARTING OX-OCEANIX-FROG300 PROJECT  (2021-2023)

We (me) continue...

Decades of watches, trades, investments (well, let's be honest: a watch, with few exceptions, is never and will never be an investment), led Bolart to amass a collection of over 170 watches (90% of them limited editions, and none of them 100% perfect).

From that period of love and heartbreak with watches, one thing became clear to Bolart: apart from a few close contenders, he never found the perfect watch—the one you would buy multiple times, just like your favorite t-shirt, in case they run out.

That's when the idea of designing a watch emerged, but not just any watch: the perfect watch, born from the shared and accumulated experiences and insights gained over the years in the world of watches.

A bit of recent watches history

The arrival (or rather, the disruptive impact) of smartwatches, including the Apple Watch in 2014, marked the beginning of a technological and social revolution that seemed destined to engulf traditional watchmaking and leave it in misery. One example of what could have been but wasn't: In 2019, the entire Swiss watchmaking industry sold fewer watches combined than Apple did with just one model (30 million versus 40 million units). The first to react was Tag Heuer, which, with limited success, found a niche by combining the best of Swiss watchmaking with electronic components (you could even swap the "smart" module for one with a mechanical movement). Meanwhile, there was a contrast between the "Swiss watch" prices and the production increase of another major watchmaking power, the Japanese, who offered reasonable prices. The problem with the Swiss was that they had gone overboard with brand value, and fewer mid-range and low-end watches were being sold. In 2020, a disastrous year for humanity, there was an increased demand for classic watchmaking, mainly in the high-end segment, while the unanimous strategy of all watch factories and manufacturers in 2023 is to raise prices to compensate for minimal sales, even eliminating traditional specialized retailers from the market.

In the midst of all this chaos, Bolart continued his search for the perfect watch among the excellent portfolio of Japanese timepieces: G-SHOCK MR-G, Seiko Marinemaster, Grand Seiko, Citizen... Yes, not Swiss watches because he was no longer interested; he had discovered the GS Spring Drive or the Hi-Beat, which offered better prices and maximum performance.

SHARING EXPERIENCES AND KNOWLEDGE + BEING A COLLECTOR OF JAPANESE WATCHES (2006-2023)

And while we're at it, why not create a brand with multiple models?

2021. OX-OCEANIX WATCHES Birth

And so OX-OCEANIX Watches was born, courtesy of Bolart. His profession and highly creative nature, his background in engineering, product design, marketing and brand equity, as well as his training as a NAUI #39896 (National Association of Underwater Instructors) scuba instructor, and his extensive logbook full of dives from around the world, all contributed to the initial sketches and ideas. And logically, his know-how in watchmaking is crucial and very welcome. Bolart has decided to change a passion that he always have had, and transform it, with a lot of effort and work, into a way of giving meaning to his life, and leaving an excellent legacy to those who love and are enthusiasts of watches. The first model, the FROG300, encompasses a wealth of know-how, primarily focused on functionality and user comfort. And of course, the perfect watch... According to Bolart... It has to be Diver's!

The HK Studio

OX OCEANIX Scuba Watches LLC has its headquarters in the United States - USA, and meticulously manufactures each watch with utmost dedication in Hong Kong, within a little studio. The studio receives components from the best suppliers, which then come together to create a FROG300 timepiece. The current movement, an automatic caliber with GMT function, is sourced from Japan and is signed by Seiko Instruments SII.

The production capacity is currently limited by the technicians and watchmakers, and it will continue to be so as part of the strategy. We will never produce on a massive scale: the FROG300 watches are limited production. They are and will always be something special, and achieving that requires a special commitment at every level. The best part of this whole story? The final sale price, a democratized price, is also an important aspect of the 99,9% perfect watch...
